A cold morning did not cool buyers down as they attended
the Cowboy Heritage XIII auction in Rapid City, SD, Feb. 4, 2007. Undoubtedly
the biggest and best offering yet, nicely displayed and presented, the
organizers had a brisk sale.
Some of the highlights of the auction were Lot 123
Deer Lodge Headstall "The Patriot" - $3,600.
Lot 142 Winchester Model 1892 25-20 - $3,400.
Lot 139 Winchester Model 1894 25-35 - $2,400.
Lot 135 Parker Bros. Presentation Shotgun - $1,900.
Lot 215 Catlin Books - $2,100.
Lot 8 Hamley Special saddle - $2,000.
Lot 4 Miles City Saddlery - $1,500.
Lot 59 G. S. Garcia Bit - $1,350.
Lot 32 Kelly Bros. spurs - $1,200
Lot 22 K.B. & P. spurs - $1,000.
The rest of the offering saw good demand all the way
through. This is probably the only Old West Collectible sale run by volunteers
with the commissions going to the BHSSF Scholarship program. We are serious when
we say "The Cowboy Sale Worth Waiting For." Hope to see you there next year.

Description for the Catlin
Set: Lot 215
Illustrations of the
Manners, Customs, and Conditions of the North American Indians; George
Catlin
Two volumes, 1851, London;
Henry G. Bohn; 8th Edition. Complete with 356 original engravings
and 3 maps (including fold-out map).
This set is one of the
scarcest on the market. The engravings represent portraitures and scenes of
Native American life in the west in the 1830s. Catlin traveled through what
is now North and South Dakota, Wyoming, and Montana. According to MacCracken
these volumes represent the most comprehensive pictorial record we have of
Indian people at this time in their natural state portraits of the most
notable chieftains, warriors, medicine men and women, as well as pictures of
religious and other tribal ceremonies and dances, etc. These engravings
have been copied hundreds of times in the last century and a half appearing
in numerous books, magazines, and framed art. It is a rare occasion when an
original set comes on the market. There are few available in this country.
There is some wear and
rubbing to the covers, with four pages of text missing in the first of 58
letters that provide explanation of the plates. However, all engravings and
maps are included. Some fixing to a few of the pages and plates, however
most are clean and crisp. The frontice page of Volume I has been archivally
reinforced. |
