BHSS Foundation …..
Stockman’s Auction Offers Unique Items, Scholarships For Students

Rapid City, SD – Whether it’s the highly sought after and much prized intricate works of artist David Yellowhorse or the hell-bent-for leather craftsmanship from the historic Miles City Saddlery in Montana, that’s how diverse the offering is at the 12th Annual BHSS Foundation Stockman’s Auction.

“And unique,” says event chairman and Foundation director John Johnson. “In a word? There are outstanding pieces in this years offering. I expect hands high in the air.”

He’s referring to the bid making (and taking) process that goes hand in hand with an auction – this one set in the very fine surroundings of the annual Stockman’s Banquet and Ball, Wednesday, February 2, 2005 at the Ramkota Best Western – the social event of stock show week.

The auction itself, that begins at 5:00 p.m. with a preview, is among the fundraisers the Foundation holds throughout the course of the Black Hills Stock Show & Rodeo, proceeds of which goes towards funding youth scholarship programs.

“It’s a volunteer effort in terms of organizing the event,” explains Johnson. “And to those who donate their time or items to the auction in part or in full, the Foundation can’t thank them enough, since the net proceeds go towards our scholarship program, that has helped a lot of kids over the years.”

The auction also provides the setting for the Foundation to recognize those students selected for scholarships that now has grown to include a renewable scholarship award of up to four years if the student continues to meet an established academic criteria.

Select items will sell following the preview and includes a pair of Ed Lawrence Lady Leg Spurs, a 2005 BHSSF Commemorative Edition overlaid with sterling silver, brass and copper. The well known Alzada, Mont. spur maker is known the world over for quality and craftsmanship with spur sets built for practical ranch wear or on the movie set, where some of his work is sought after by western movie producers such as Tom Selleck.

Cowgirl gear and accessories are also highly prized items at this auction where bidding is sure to be competitive on a K-J Leather & Cowgirl Classics, Newell, SD consignment of a woman’s purse, hair on cowhide with silver dots for decoration and a sterling silver concho/magnetic clasp.

The Foundation’s Great American Cowboy Series Commemorative Art and Limited Edition Prints are a sale feature. Fifth in the series, (donated in part by Farm Credit Services of America) this year’s work by western artist Mick Harrison, Belle Fourche, SD, is titled “Empty Saddles ~ Reflections of the West.” The original 33” x 17 ½” gouache painting features contemporary visionaries who shaped communities, industry and the West.

“The painting shows the subjects with the sun going down and without their own reflections in the water, since they are all deceased,” explains Harrison. “Their reflections are instead the words, “The Great American Cowboy”, in honor of their contribution to the cowboy way of life.”

‘Sons of the West’ detailed on canvas include Korczak Ziolkowski, Crazy Horse; Everett “Ep” Howe, Rapid City; Jim Baldridge, North Platte, Neb.; Bill Hustead, Wall, SD and Bruce Walker, Sturgis.

In addition to the original art that is framed, plated and comes with a Legend and Certificate of Authenticity, bidding will also get underway for the number one print (of 25) that is also framed and plated with accompanying documentation.

“As a collector’s edition,” says Foundation President Joe Norman, “the Foundation’s Great American Cowboy Series is very popular and truly embodies the Foundation’s mission of preserving the legacy while investing in the future.”
