Meet The Board…
Central States Fair Holds Annual Election of Officers
Some folks wear more than one hat.
Like Terry Taylor, Rapid City businessman recently re-elected as
Secretary of the Central States Fair (CSF) who also serves as a Director to the
Black Hills Stock Show Foundation (BHSSF). As does CSF Manager Ron Jeffries.
Others elected to lead CSF during its annual meeting are Ken Kirkeby,
President; Kevin Martin, Vice President; and Carter Johnson, Treasurer.
Additional seated directors include John Sletten, Mary London, Tim McClaren,
Jeff Cullun, Janice Morgan, Nancee Maynard, Bruce Rampelberg and Andy Storm.
It’s all a part of various interests working together toward a common
goal…providing great settings, programs and entertainment that to a large
extent, promote the evolving role of western enthusiasts and production
agriculture.
"Those two areas are winning combinations in this part of the country,
always have been," says Taylor. "While each of us finds our own spot to work
from, there are plenty of opportunities and ways to come together to arrive at
the best solutions on any given project or event …. solutions where everyone
benefits."
Working with the two organizations, Jeffries agrees. "The Foundation offers
its support and services that enhance certain areas of not only the Central
States Fair and the Black Hills Stock Show & Rodeo, but also other community and
regional interests. The insight they bring is invaluable to staying grounded in
the philosophies of the originating founders of many of these events."
The non-profit Foundation’s history of providing financial support for the
Central States Fair that also manages a portion of South Dakota’s second largest
spectator venue, the Black Hills Stock Show & Rodeo, is made possible in part
through supporting and becoming involved in promoting increasing awareness for
all things agriculture.
"Whether it’s marking 46 years of commercial and seedstock producers coming
to an event or 27 years of the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center and Sutton Rodeos
envisioning what the future could hold by bringing a show into the Civic Center,
there’s plenty of accomplishments to go around," says Foundation President, Joe
Norman.
"People with a common vision, working together has resulted in this region
being recognized around the country for its quality of livestock, top level
professional rodeo and a unique mix of other attractions that brings upwards of
300,000 visitors in a single event alone, to our part of the world. It's a
privilege to be a part of that."
And to work together with community leaders like Ken Kirkeby. " Ken has
been such a champion for the Foundation," says BHSSF Community Relations
Director Diane Norman. "From being game enough to be a model for our fundraising
’04 Cowboy Calendar to making sure kids winning scholarships get the spotlight
at the Stockman’s Banquet & Ball, he is what I’d describe as a
consensus-builder. He is a valued Stockman’s Club member for the Foundation."
Doug Theel, BHSSF Vice President also points to the benefits of
organizations working together. "That includes direct support to events," he
observes. "The public at large sees the Fair and Stock Show as this huge,
overall presence with hundreds of thousands people attending," he observes. "Yet
within all of that, are programs and services that require additional financial
support if they are to continue to be offered at the level the viewing and
buying public have come to expect."
Adds Taylor, "The Foundation is an organization that has not only the
historical perspective working for it but also represents progressive leaders
who are grounded in production agriculture and what that means to the ongoing
economic and social development of this region.
"The opportunity to work in that setting and with the Central States Fair
that is definitely on a growth curve with its new Event Center, offers me and
others a lot of personal and professional satisfaction."
Volunteering to serve as a Director is all that, along with some headaches
and sleepless nights too.
But it’s all a part of ….. Welcome to the Board!
