Six Mile Road plays a blend of hard driving, traditional bluegrass. For the hardcore
bluegrass listeners they serve up classic fiddle tunes, Bill Monroe favorites and modern
bluegrass, but they mix it up with jazz, swing and the blues. (photos and sample of music at

The Dahl Presents Art of the New West:
Not Your Traditional Western Art Show
The Dahl asked artists living and working in the United States, west of the Mississippi River, to submit contemporary work that would contribute
to a dialogue about the state of the western ranch in the 21st century.
Sixty-seven artists submitted 157 pieces for consideration. Of these, 35 artists and 45 pieces were accepted. Local Black Hills artists chosen
for the show include Steve Babbitt, Gordon Donohoe, Dede Farrar, Lloyd Kreitz, Dan Miller, Bob H. Miller, Susan Turnbull and Ray Tysdal.
Juror, Theodore Waddell, is a native Montana painter and sculptor whose resume also includes nearly two decades as the hands-on manager of
working cattle ranches. Born in Billings and raised in Laurel, he
Waddell taught at the University of Montana until 1976, after which he worked full-time as
a rancher and artist. He maintains studios in Manhattan, Montana and Hailey, Idaho. His work is represented in numerous public collections
including The Denver Art Museum, the Eitlejorg Museum, The Buffalo Bill Historical Museum and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
Juror's Statement: December 6, 2002
"I am impressed with the strong character of the work presented. The
land, its people, and activities feed directly into the work that is being done. This is the best of all situations as it indicates honesty
and integrity. Some say that all good art is regional even though we have been led to believe, at times, that what is good is being done
somewhere else. The strength of this body of work, informed by the landscape of the West, states that this is not true. This is a strong,
diverse investigation of the West. Congratulations to all who submitted work."
Theodore Waddell
Curator's comments: January 7, 2003
"The Art of the New West is not your typical western art show. Theodore
Waddell, has chosen a wonderfully eclectic mix of artistic styles, media and messages for us to ponder as we explore the latest in a series of
juried exhibitions in which the Dahl Arts Center has invited artists to contribute to a dialogue about contemporary issues. I hope that our
visitors will find enjoyment in the art on our walls, but also in the ideas they represent. I fully expect that not everyone will like every piece
of art, and quite honestly, that's good! A strong reaction to art may inspire us to consider the artist's intention, our own sense of
aesthetics, or in this case, the state of the western ranch in the 21st century."
